KATRINA SHEENA SMYTH
ARTIST STATEMENT

My work is a way of me communicating an understanding of myself with my environment, through processes of art making that are often impulsive in nature and that employ a reflection of an 'unknown' or 'unfamiliar' empirical experience. The processes involved in making the work are as important as the mental process involved in reading the work.

I am interested in how an individual is affected by their surroundings, in particular, the awareness that occurs when one encounters something new or different. I use methods of drawing that are not bound to the traditional aesthetics of 'art' - recognised as representational objects, composition and narratives. On the contrary, I explore the lines I draw through the spontaneities of my mind, which often occupy space in a sculptural sense, through drawing installations, durational/performances and processed based drawings.

Using meditative processes that involve repetitive and free-flowing actions, I create work that evokes a sense of self reflection that is free from associations. The influence of my environment may be evident in in the structure of my drawings, often developing in formations of architectural perspectives, landscapes or organic lines.

I am interested in creating a space that refreshes the mind; where familiar meets unfamiliar, mental meets physical and internal embodies external.
