ARTIST’S STATEMENT
Berlin ist eine arme Stadt. Aber Berlin ist eine reiche Stadt, reich an
freien Flächen. Areale, die sich für neue Ideen, manchmal sogar für
Experimente anbieten. In Zürich, wo ich herkomme, gibt es das nicht.
Dort hat jeder Ort mindestens 5 Funktionen. Alles ist ziemlich
kleinräumig und verbaut.
Nur, wohin steuert Berlin? Nicht nur rund um den Hauptbahnhof sind
zahlreiche Hotels und andere gewinnorientierte Bauten geplant.
Dabei machen gerade die unbebauten Flächen den Charme von
Berlin aus. Diese Stadt hat einen ganz eigenen Rhythmus von
einerseits bevölkerten Gegenden und andererseits leer stehenden
Flächen. Freiräume werden wohl meist unterschätzt. Dabei sind
sie unbezahlbar.
In urbanen Zentren entwickelt sich das Leben fort. Freiflächen
machen eine Stadt wertvoll.

Berlin is a poor city. But Berlin is a rich city, rich with free space.
Areas where there is a place for new ideas, sometimes even for
experiments. In Zurich where I come from, we do not have that
space. There every place has at least five functions. Everything
is at a small scale and obstructed.
But: in what direction is Berlin developing? Not only around the
“Hauptbahnhof” where numerous hotels and other buildings
for-profit are planed. Although just these voids constitute the
charm of Berlin. This city has its own rhythm of crowded and
empty areas. Probably empty places are mostly underestimated,
but they are inestimable!
In towns life is proceeding. Voids are the heart of cities.
